Biography
Born in 1983, Niigata (JP)
Based in Tokyo (JP)
YAMADA, Kenji born in 1983 in Tokyo, Japan. Yamada is an artist whose approach edits ruins and rituals, documentary footage and materials, in order to capture the ways of modern society as our conceptually new experiences. His experiments in "how the facts of the ancient function in the present" are informed by the conceptual breakthroughs and new elds of modern society. His approach is coacted by his participation in local groups such as research installations and documentary film crews, which provided direction to the key to their activities, and the results of this participation are still being released in his experimental projects today.
At the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, Yamada has organized the project that he will be running a what is called a
"yukimuro", a kind of ancient traditional refrigerator used long ago in the mountainous regions, as an ice hotel, a facility that allows customers to stay as if they were food or hibernating, surrounded by massive piles of snow. At London's Crypt Gallery, he has exhibited that documentary footage of the "sky burial" ritual in Tibet, where the esh of the deceased is given up to the birds, will be played in reverse, so that seems as if the beaks of birds combine to form a human body.
